India v New Zealand New Zealand win by 47 runs

India v New Zealand New Zealand win by 47 runs
just now        New Zealand’s spinners end with combined figures of 9-44. Over to KANE WILLIAMSON…
“Obviously I’m very pleased. It was a tough surface and whatever score we got, we knew it was going to be tough to chase, but we would probably have liked a few more. But the way the guys bowled was outstanding.”
New Zealand’s spinners end with combined figures of 9-44. Over to KANE WILLIAMSON…
“Obviously I’m very pleased. It was a tough surface and whatever score we got, we knew it was going to be tough to chase, but we would probably have liked a few more. But the way the guys bowled was outstanding.”
Over 18.1 - India 79 all out (Bumrah 0)
Santner is a shoe-in for Player of the Match as he finishes with 4-11 off four overs after Milne delivers the final blow. That's a fifth win for New Zealand over India with no reverses in World T20Is.
Over 18.1 - India 79 all out (Bumrah 0)
Santner is a shoe-in for Player of the Match as he finishes with 4-11 off four overs after Milne delivers the final blow. That's a fifth win for New Zealand over India with no reverses in World T20Is.

Over 18 - India 79-9 (Bumrah 0, Nehra 0)
The fans are pouring out of the ground as India’s cause becomes utterly hopeless. Dhoni did smother-pull Santner for four earlier in the over but has no chance of repeating the stroke as the spinner finds excessive spin outside off stump. India need 48 off 12 balls.

WICKET! Dhoni c McCullum b Santner 30 – India 79-9
Santner has his fourth as Dhoni goes down town but can’t get the required elevation and McCullum takes a fine tumbling catch at long on.

Over 17 - India 75-8 (Dhoni 26, Nehra 0)
Too little, too late from Dhoni who smotes Sodhi’s first ball down the ground for six but can only watch as Ashwin is royally deceived. Nehra just about defends a googly first up and a slip comes in as New Zealand’s confidence grows and grows. India need 52 runs off 18 balls.

WICKET! Ashwin st Ronchi b Sodhi 10 – India 73-8
Superb from Sodhi, who tosses the ball up to drag Ashwin out of his crease leaving Ronchi to whip the bails off smart as you like

Over 16 - India 66-7 (Dhoni 18, Ashwin 10)
Signs of desperation from Dhoni, who swings across the line at Anderson’s first ball only to swipe at thin air as the seamer takes the pace off. No miracles off that over mean India need 61 off 24 balls.

Over 15 - India 61-7 (Dhoni 16, Ashwin 8)
Sodhi finds some outrageous turn, all be it from short of a length, giving Ashwin time to adjust before Dhoni looks to go large but has to settle for just two after failing to connect anywhere near as well as he’d have liked. Ashwin flirts with danger, driving at the turning ball and edging just short of third man. Sodhi has 2-9 off three. India need 66 more to win off five overs.

Over 14 - India 57-7 (Dhoni 13, Ashwin 7)
Music blares out over the tannoy as Santner comes in to bowl to Dhoni, who casually pulls away all the while looking unruffled, but the spinner thereafter continues to choke the run-rate. India need 70 runs off 36 balls, as Dhoni changes his bat. Here it comes…

Over 13 - India 53-7 (Dhoni 11, Ashwin 5)
India’s lowest T20I total is the 74 made against Australia at Melbourne in 2008 – that looks a little way off right now. Milne is milked for four singles before the seamer runs one past Ashwin’s edge on the dab cut. India need 74 more off 42 balls.

Over 12 - India 49-7 (Dhoni 9, Ashwin 3)
The spinners are more than repaying the selectors’ faith right now. While Dhoni remains at the crease, India have hope. Williamson rings the changes and brings McCullum back – Dhoni and Ashwin content for now to poke a few singles.

WICKET! Jadeja c & b Sodhi 0 – India 43-7
Sodhi sprints across to his left and dives to grab a loopy return catch as Jadeja rather prods too firmly at the ball, playing with hard hands

Over 10 - India 42-6 (Dhoni 5, Jadeja 0)
Replays show it was umpire’s call – and it was promptly given. Santner now has 3-3 and India need 85 more from 60 balls. The crowd is hushed.

WICKET! Pandya lbw b Santner 1 – India 42-6
Umpire Richard Illingworth has no hesitation in raising the finger as Pandya is caught on the back foot by one that looks straight enough to the naked eye

Over 9 - India 41-5 (Dhoni 4, Pandya 1)
Sodhi slips in a decent googly to Pandya third up, but the batsman spots it and prods forward in defence before picking up a leg-side single. Dhoni hangs back to wait for a short ball and keeps the strike with one to long on. India need 86 runs from 66 balls.

WICKET! Kohli c Ronchi b Sodhi 23 – India 39-5
Leg-spinner Sodhi strikes with his first delivery as Kohli drives at one that turns off the pitch and snicks through

Over 8 - India 39-4 (Dhoni 3, Kohli 23)
Now sporting a cap against Elliott’s medium-pace, Dhoni pumps a single through the covers; Kohli digs out a decent yorker to pick up two to deep midwicket but the boundaries remain elusive.India need 88 more from 72 balls.

Over 7 - India 33-4 (Dhoni 2, Kohli 19)
Dhoni calls for a helmet as Milne enters the fray – the seamer begins with a huge front-foot no-ball that Kohli creams to mid-wicket where the ‘catch’ is taken. Taylor shies at the stumps but Milne can’t gather, otherwise Dhoni might have been struggling. Kohli strokes a single to deep point and another to deep midwicket. That’s still only four off the over, though.

Over 6 - India 29-4 (Dhoni 1, Kohli 17)
India, remember, have lost four of their last five World T20Is to New Zealand – and that other game was rained off. Elliott, bowling to a helmet-less (and hat-less) Dhoni, maintains the pressure by conceding only three off his opening over.

Over 5 - India 26-4 (Dhoni 0, Kohli 15)
Enter Dhoni – a man for a crisis if ever there was one brewing. Yuvraj fell one ball after bottom-edging a sweep for four. McCullum has 2-11 off two overs.

WICKET! Yuvraj c & b McCullum 4 – India 26-4
Easy decision for the third umpire as Singh drives a return catch back to McCullum – the batsman hanging around in case it was a bump ball but it was his bat, rather than the ball that connected with the turf

Over 4 - India 21-3 (Yuvraj 0, Kohli 14)
A brace of fours for Kohli, who cuts hard past backward point before advancing to drive Anderson sweetly passed mid-on. The fightback is up and running.

Talking telephone numbers...

Over 3 - India 12-3 (Yuvraj 0, Kohli 5)
Two wickets for as many runs in that Santner over – and India are suddenly right up against it, all be it with two experienced batsmen at the crease and Dhoni still to come.

WICKET! Raina c Guptill b Santner 1 – India 12-3
Raina closes the face too early on a drag-down delivery that sticks a little in the pitch and chips the simplest of chances to midwicket. Black Caps cock-a-hoop.

WICKET! Sharma st Ronchi b Santner 5 – India 10-2
Santner strikes second ball – although Ronchi only completes the stumping after a classic juggle. It stuck second time and his embarrassment was spared

Over 2 - India 10-1 (Sharma 5, Kohli 4)
Anderson, on hoping to benefit from a little swing, opens up at the other end and is promptly despatched for a couple as Kohli flicks leg-side. Calmness personified. Just four off the over, though, as Anderson finds a tight line.

Over 1 - India 6-1 (Sharma 4, Kohli 1)
Game on. Sharma chipped the first ball of the innings just wide of Guptill at midwicket before Dhawan, beaten outside off, failed to lay bat on a sweep shot.

WICKET! Dhawan lbw McCullum 1 – India 5-1
New Zealand strike in the first over too as Dhawan unwisely tries to sweep his third ball from McCullum off middle

Time for Williamson to give one last rallying call before India begin their chase...

It was an emotive start for New Zealand after a pre-match tribute on the big screen to Martin Crowe and MIKE ATHERTONsays that might just explain  their hit-and-miss start...
"Martin was very close to a couple of the New Zealand players in particular - Ross Taylor was in tears and Martin Guptill wiped away a tear too. He mentored those players so it was a difficult start; emotions were high anyway."

JAMES ANDERSON reckons the Black Caps batsmen have rather let their bowlers down. I wonder how often that idea has been mooted in the England camp?
“There was some good bowling but I don’t think there was a great deal of finesse from the batsmen. They are a big-hitting side and they were trying to hit big shots all the time on a pitch that wasn’t suited for it. I think they’ve missed a trick there; they could have picked up another 20 runs in the middle by being a bit smarter. But to be fair to India, they did start very well.”

STUART BROAD says the Black Caps might just still be in this – but the spinners will have to come to their rescue…
“I think it’s a tricky pitch – I don’t think it was ever a 180 pitch. New Zealand will be slightly disappointed they didn’t realise that a bit earlier and try to get to 140-150. I certainly don’t think they are out of the game because the wicket is offering a little bit for length and it’s turning for the spinners, and New Zealand have packed their team full of spin.”

SURESH RAINA, who finished with 1-16 off four overs, doesn't see it as a foregone conclusion but India will need to implode not to start the Super 10s in style:
“I think we bowled really well as a unit; when you are chasing 126 you need to be very clear and know what areas you are looking for. You need to rotate the strike when the ball is turning.”just now

Dhoni strides off confidently - surely the hosts have this in the bag?

Over 20 - New Zealand 126-7 (McCullum 0, Ronchi 19)
Ronchi inside edges through his legs for four – much to Nehra’s displeasure – and then swats a full toss over midwicket for six. That got what it deserved. This is New Zealand’s lowest T20I total against India.

WICKET! Elliott run out (Dhawan) 9 – NZ 114-7
Elliott, trying to get back for a second, is beaten by Dhawan’s pinpoint throw – Nehra collecting and breaking the wicket before the ball slips from his grasp

Over 19 - New Zealand 111-6 (Elliott 8, Ronchi 7)
Elliott just about gets his toe down in time to beat more sharp work by Dhoni, who whips the bails off but not in the nick of time this occasion. Ronchi goes up and over extra cover with great success – striking Jadeja crisply for four – before pulling to backward square for one.

Over 18 - New Zealand 103-6 (Elliott 6, Ronchi 1)
Second fifty of the innings up off 49 balls, only marginally quicker than the first (55). Bumrah bamboozles Elliott with a shorter, slower ball – expertly changing his pace again to beat his man with an off-cutter. Elliott scampers home to beat another Raina direct hit. Everything must go now as far as New Zealand are concerned.

Over 17 - New Zealand 98-6 (Elliott 2, Ronchi 0)
Santner goes one ball after coming down the track and hitting Jadeja just about as straight as is humanly possible. Jadeja now has 1-18 off three overs. India remain firmly on top.

WICKET! Santner c Dhoni b Jadeja 18 – NZ 98-6
No obvious signs of discomfort now for Dhoni as he safely pouches a skied chance by Santner, who top-edges on the pull

Over 16 - New Zealand 90-5 (Elliott 1, Santner 12)
Should be plenty of death bowlers around the world admiring Bumrah’s control in that over – Anderson simply couldn’t get the full ball away, tried something different and paid the price.

WICKET! Anderson b Bumrah 34 – NZ 89-5
Brilliant control from Bumrah accounts for Anderson – the seamer knocks middle stump out of the ground with a precise yorker as Anderson looks to reverse ramp

Over 15 - New Zealand 88-4 (Anderson 34, Santner 11)
Pace off works for Pandya first up as he beats Santner but his second attempt is too leg-side and the batsman whips him away for four much-needed runs.

Quick recap? Don't mind if I do...

Over 14 - New Zealand 78-4 (Anderson 33, Santner 3)
Raina’s figures belie his part-time status – he finishes with 1-16 off four overs as Anderson attempts to reverse sweep but fails to connect.

Over 13 - New Zealand 75-4 (Anderson 32, Santner 1)
Dhoni has no chance as Jadeja jags one back over middle stump, the ball flying away for four byes. No wonder New Zealand have gone with a plethora of spinners. Jadeja shouts confidently for lbw against Santner but to no avail before Dhoni takes a painful rap on the right thumb, attempting a leg-side take. India’s skipper throws his gloves off straight away and receives treatment – this couldn’t be the end of his T20, could it? He’s fine to continue, thankfully, but he must have suffered bruising at the very least given his reaction. Anderson, on bended knee, pulls hard but misses and the ball somehow slips past off stump and cannons into Dhoni’s fingers again. He doesn’t look too comfortable.

Over 12 - New Zealand 63-4 (Anderson 30, Santner 1)
That truly was a wicket out of nothing from an inspired piece of fielding. Santner strides in with some real work to do now. It's Jadeja to continue...

WICKET! Taylor run out (Raina) 10 – NZ 61-4
Supremely athletic stuff from Raina, who springs to his left to gather off his own bowling before breaking the wicket with a well-executed shy as he tumbled to the turf

Over 11 - New Zealand 59-3 (Anderson 28, Taylor 9)
There’s turn straight away for Jadeja, who runs down the middle of the pitch backwards appealing for lbw against Taylor (the ball was going over), who survives to then get a leading edge to mid-off for one. The batsmen exchange singles before Anderson advances and is rather fortunate to inside edge past his stumps – Dhoni poised to grab his second stumping.

 Over 10 - New Zealand 55-3 (Anderson 26, Taylor 7)
The fifty comes up – it seems to have taken an eternity after those 13 runs off the first over; Ashwin half appeals for lbw against Taylor, more in hope than expectation, as the ball turned down leg. Slick as you like, Taylor opens the face and runs the spinner past Dhoni’s gloves for four – a super shot if ever there was one. Ashwin finishes with 1-32 off his four overs.

Over 9 - New Zealand 49-3 (Anderson 25, Taylor 2)
Anderson tucks Raina behind square for a couple and bags another two through midwicket to keep things ticking over. The left-hander hammers a short ball straight at Rohit at extra cover – that one was travelling – before miscuing a heavy pull to deep midwicket. Plenty of intent, not just the boundary-end result.

Over 8 - New Zealand 42-3 (Anderson 19, Taylor 1)
Bumrah’s first ball proves more expensive than his first over, Anderson biffing a slower ball down the park for four. Taylor targets the same area in rather more measured fashion to pick up a single and get off the mark fourth ball. Seven off this over in total.

Over 7 - New Zealand 35-3 (Anderson 13, Taylor 0)
Williamson played for some turn that wasn’t there. Simple as that. That was New Zealand’s lowest powerplay score against India, by the way, despite a six off the first ball! Raina replaces Ashwin – Dhoni keen to keep an over from his premier spinner up his sleeve.

WICKET! Williamson st Dhoni b Raina 8 – NZ 35-3
The skipper is stumped by an absolute distance – no need for the third umpire – as Raina expertly draws him down the pitch

Over 6 - New Zealand 33-2 (Anderson 12, Williamson 7)
Bumrah, who has 15 wickets in his 11 T20Is to date, opens up with three dots to Williamson forcing Anderson to contemplate a risky run – he was well gone had the Jadeja’s shy hit the stumps even with a dive. Just one run off a super opening over from the young seamer. That's the powerplay done and dusted.

Over 5 - New Zealand 32-2 (Anderson 12, Williamson 6)
Dhoni opts to keep Ashwin going and he almost removes the advancing Anderson, who top-edges a leg-side delivery high over midwicket for four – easy pickings had a fielder been out there. Ashwin gets away with a short ball that Williamson pulls hard to backward square for no run – that was boundary time and no mistake. Anderson calls his skipper through for a quick single and his bat perhaps saves him from a direct hit, inadvertently diverting the ball away from the stumps. Anderson sweeps hard for four to justify his rather risky run.

Over 4 - New Zealand 22-2 (Anderson 3, Williamson 5)
Anderson rather grimaces as he misses out on a leg-stump delivery and then picks out mid-off and mid-on, no run resulting. Nehra, no doubt relishing his comeback, ties Williamson up with a ball that comes back in only to finish the over with a rank, short slower ball that the Black Caps skipper hammers between extra cover and mid-off.

Over 3 - New Zealand 17-2 (Anderson 2, Williamson 1)
With a powerful flick of the wrists, Anderson whips Ashwin’s third ball to long on for a single. The spinner drops a little short and Williamson gratefully waits before working another single to long on. Anderson paddles around the corner for a third single off the over but that’s as good as it gets for the Black Caps in this over.

Over 2 - New Zealand 14-2 (Anderson 0, Williamson 0)
Quite what Williamson makes of his team-mates trying, and so far failing, to emulate McCullum can’t be a mystery. He and Anderson see out the over watchfully – each yet to score after two balls apiece.

WICKET! Munro c Pandya b Nehra 7 – NZ 13-2
Nehra strikes third ball as Munro aims big over mid-off but fails to connect properly and gifts Pandya the simplest of catches

Over 1 - New Zealand 13-1 (Munro 7, Williamson 0)
Munro blocks his first ball, then sticks Ashwin in the stands with a reverse sweep – boy, has that set the standard for this match. Go hard or go home.

...and out. Or was it?

Six...

WICKET! Guptill lbw Ashwin 6 – New Zealand 6-1
A truly sensational start. Guptill smotes the first ball of the match down the ground for six only to be trapped lbw on the sweep by the very next delivery!
